•The economy is growing. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had declined in October, improved in November. The Index now stands at 56.0 (1985=100), up from 40.9 in October.
Volume Up: The monthly Cass freight index said October shipment levels grew 2.2% over the same month last year, while shipper expenditures jumped 16.1%.
Truck Tonnage Increases. The American Trucking Associations’ advance seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 0.5% in October after rising a revised 1.5% in September 2011. Compared with October 2010, SA tonnage was up 5.7%. In September, the tonnage index was 5.8% above a year earlier. Further, October’s tonnage reading was just 4.4% below the index’s all-time high in Jan. 2005.
Truck Sales Up. The maker of Freightliner and Western Star trucks projected “strong” growth in truck sales, Bloomberg said. Freightliner and Western Star are brands of Daimler Trucks North America.
